On September 25 and 26, Trieste welcomed us in the remarkable setting of Trieste Next, the Festival of Scientific Research, an important opportunity for dialogue and exchange between research, innovation, technology, and society.
Among the key topics of this year’s edition were liver health and the prevention of MASLD (Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease), commonly known as “fatty liver disease.” This increasingly widespread condition, affecting both adults and children, highlights the need to rethink prevention strategies and develop new tools to support early detection, awareness, and healthier lifestyles.
On Saturday, September 26, we took part in the round table “Healthy Liver: Prevention Becomes Intelligent”, organized by the Italian Liver Foundation and the Global Liver Institute (GLI).
The discussion brought together medical, scientific, technological, and ethical expertise in a truly multidisciplinary setting. Speakers included Giacomo Donnini, Program Director at the Global Liver Institute; Anna Ludovica Fracanzani, Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Milan; Francesca Marin, Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Padua; and Sergio Giovanni Santoro, Chief Information Officer at Unicorn Apulia. The discussion was moderated by Natalia Rosso, Senior Researcher and Group Leader of the MASLD Unit at the Italian Liver Foundation.
The diversity of expertise made it possible to explore prevention from different yet complementary perspectives: from understanding the disease to education, from individual responsibility to ethical considerations, and finally to the contribution that technological innovation, digital tools, and monitoring devices can make to prevention and health protection.
We discussed an “intelligent” approach to prevention, in which technology and knowledge do not replace the individual but instead become tools to increase awareness, facilitate monitoring, and encourage healthier everyday choices. The goal is to build a more effective, personalized, and sustainable model of prevention, capable of transforming scientific knowledge and technological innovation into concrete actions for liver health.
For Unicorn Apulia, being part of this discussion meant bringing the perspective of those who work every day to transform research, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies applied to medicine into tools that can be effectively used in clinical practice and prevention pathways.
We leave Trieste with one key message: the future of prevention lies at the intersection of scientific research, technology, education, and individual responsibility. Prevention becomes truly intelligent when it succeeds in turning data and knowledge into simple, practical tools that help people take better care of their health.
